Perfect Pairing: Ultra-Creative Kids

Being so close to one of the world’s most prestigious art and design schools definitely rubs off on us. Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) is a huge institution in our fair city. There are even a few MICA alumni on the aMuse team!

For the ultra-creative kids in your life we have the perfect pairing of Ellen Lupton’s D.I.Y. Kids book and the Australian open-ended construction set MAKEDO.

Graphic Designer and author, Ellen Lupton

Ellen Lupton is a world-renowned graphic designer and a Baltimore local. She heads the graduate graphic design department at MICA and has written a ton of design books that are used as texts in art academies worldwide. She’s truly a Baltimore treasure. We’re fortunate enough to have her stop by the store to craft with us on occasion. It’s always a fun and artful experience.

Ellen Lupton design book is D.I.Y. Kids is her how-to manual for all things kid-made. From creating your own designer patterns to learning to hand bind your own books, there’s a project in it to inspire anyone.

Our favorite part of the book is the artist profiles. The beginning of each chapter includes a write-up on a different creative who makes a living through art. A toy designer, industrial designer and fashion designer are featured.

Ellen has personally signed all of our copies of her book to make it even more special.

D.I.Y. Kids goes perfectly with a set of MAKEDO. It’s an open-ended, reusable construction set for us with recycled materials. Kids collect items such a milk jugs, cereal boxes, toilet paper tubes and scrap paper and connect them in to brilliant works of art. Some kids have even created entire MAKEDO cities with this stuff!

These two items together will inspire hours of creative, sustainable play.

Take a look at the video below to see how MAKEDO works.
